Seeking the Creative: Kayla Thompson, Singer and Songwriter
How would you describe your art in three words?
That’s a bit of a hard question for me because I feel like I’m still finding my sound and developing my brand. So every year, or even with every project or song, my style evolves a little bit. But I just really love telling stories through my songwriting. If you listen to my music, I will try to paint a visual picture lyrically. But in three words I would say my music is relatable, has an acoustic-pop sound, and my voice.
Kayla Thompson is living proof that it is never too late to change gears in life and pursue your dreams. The singer/ songwriter from Boston, Massachusetts always had an underlying love for singing, yet never had the confidence to express that side of herself. At 21 years old, she made the decision to enact on her lifelong dreams. Now, at 26, Kayla has produced several songs that display her extraordinary talent. Her lyrics are vulnerable and something audiences can relate to. Kayla produces her music with the hopes that her listeners can both enjoy a good song, while also resonating and connecting with the story told through her words. In the future, the young singer sees herself collaborating with artists who hold the same passions as her, creating lasting pieces of music destined to be heard on the radio and loved by wide audiences.
Where/how do you gather inspiration?
It’s interesting to be asked this question right now, in this season because I have felt a little uninspired lately (just one of those artist things.) But I usually write about things that are happening in my life or my feelings, and other times I’ll write about stories from people around me; friends and family. I think writing about real things, feelings, circumstances and going a little deeper to the core of whatever that is, is the key for me.
What do you hope audiences retain from your work?
I hope that people would get a sense of peace from listening to my music. If it’s an upbeat pop style song and they’re just loving the groove, or it’s more of a ballad and the lyrics are resonating with them. I want to write about things that I go through in the hopes that my transparency can make anyone listening feel understood or less alone.
