Seeking the Creative: Khail (Mikhail Andrei Fabi), Musician

How would you describe your art in three words?

Pensive. Melodramatic. Wistful.

Khail, born as Mikhail Andrei Fabi, is a student at Berklee College of Music, pursuing his dream of becoming a musician. Having access to private piano lessons, music recitals, and organized bands, he has always been involved with music for the entirety of his life. Yet, the creation of his song at the age of 14 encouraged his pursuit of music. Watching covers and original songs on YouTube from artists he admired, he entertained a transforming thought: “This is what I want to do in life. This has to be it.”

Making his ideas and melodies into a tangible thing was intriguing enough to make him study music. He incorporates his art daily, from “jotting down song lyrics into my notes app on the train, or quietly singing a melody into my voice memos on my way to class”, he’s constantly inspired by his environment and situations. In the future, he anticipates an intimate relationship with his art and audience — he is always open to where his music resonates with people. Ideally, he envisions a “space where only three things are present: me, the music, and the listener”. For Khail, having this mutual connection with his music deepens his devotion to his craft and community, and this defined space brings out his most authentic self. Where/how do you gather inspiration?

Honestly, I’m so influenced by my surroundings that it’s quite easy for me to gather inspiration anytime and anywhere. I take long walks around the city while listening to music, which usually causes an array of emotions to arise within me. My mind is also just constantly absorbing information and experiencing emotions. I find something new to write about every day. Especially in today’s world, with the Internet and all, I feel as if it’s a lot easier now to gather new ideas and find niche groups of people with similar interests to seek inspiration from.

What do you hope audiences retain from your work?

I just want listeners to know that every single emotion that is captured in my music is very real and honest. I always used to make myself feel so ashamed or guilty for feeling certain things and writing them into my songs, when in reality, my thoughts and feelings were completely valid at the time. Anyone that ends up relating to my music is so valid for feeling those things too.
